In 2020, Microsoft stopped providing security updates for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. However, some users who purchased the Extended Security Update program were still able to use these operating systems.

Now, the company is reminding its customers that support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8.1 will end on January 10, 2023, and extended support for all editions of Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 will end on October 10.

Microsoft has announced that it will not be offering the Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1. The company has advised organizations that using Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023, may increase their security risks or affect their compliance obligations.

It is mentioned clearly that After the specified date, these products will no longer receive security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical content updates,” Microsoft stated.

It is important to note that January 10 is also the release date of the final version of Microsoft Edge with support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, version 109. While the browser will still function on these operating systems, it will not receive security updates, making it vulnerable to bugs and security issues.

Azure Arc allows customers with on-premises servers to take advantage of automated and scheduled ESU updates, as well as the security and governance features offered by Microsoft in Azure.

It is recommended for users that Windows laptop upgrade to the latest version, Windows 11, which offers various improvements and features, including support for Android apps through the Microsoft Store.

To update your system, go to Settings and select ‘Check for updates’ under the Windows Update tab. Then, click ‘Download’ to begin the process of installing Windows 11.
